Theres always a tension on reseller accounts - do you buy cheap and get stuffed on an oversold server with 100 other resellers or do you go more expensive and get a hopefully more reliable service??

I agree with jstanden... just because people CAN host their own websites doesn't mean they will. Sure there will be hobbyists who want to learn how to host their own site, but for the most part people need a website for their business or for personal reasons, and their focus isn't on web hosting.... it's in running their business. If they know they can pay a company $10 or $20 a month for a hosting account, that's certainly a lot easier than learning how to do it themselves.

I think the hosting industry is safe for the time being :)

Rob.

I think their will some consolidation in the industry over time. Dedicated servers will be what reseller accounts are today - in high demand and very affordable. New software packages will allow the non-technical user to completely manage a server. Just give it 2 or 3 years from today.
