Question Disputing Credit Card Charges - 04-28-2004, 07:02 PM

I do post on various boards but Ii am curious to get feedback here:

I am often seeing postings of people recommending to other people to request a chargeback directly from the credit card company. Yet, as business owners, we all try to avoid chargebacks as much as possible.

Now I know the suggestions are often given because the company "seems" at fault, but we usually only hear one side. It appears some people are projecting a double-standard. In no way am I on the side of the credit card companies, but as a business owner, I am just concerned about the public thinking that this is the way to solve problems. BTW, I have only experienced 1 chargeback and it was with my previous company.

Any thoughts or experiences?

As a consumer I've only initiated one charge back, and it was because I was charged several times for the same item - a computer which they thought the charge didn't go thru, so swiped the card 4 more times til it maxed my card.

Obviously a company error, but I get the impression many people feel that they can just pick up the phone and get credit for a purchase, even if they simply change their mind, or "forget" what it was.

yes wayne, i think a lot of people do feel that way. A chargeback should be the last resort for a dispute, yet many people use it as a tool. They figure if they don't like something, they can always do a chargeback.

I will only go that route after trying all other possible routes. You should always try to make some type of reconciliation with the company before contacting your bank. It is a hassle for you and a fee for them.

You are right chargebacks are too easy to do. When a person calls the credit card company to demand a chargeback I think the payment should go on hold until they hear from the company. I know I got charged for something that I didn't even order and when I called the credit card company they just told me ok and they took it off. They didn't ask me if I know what the item was or anything. What stops people from ordering stuff and taking it and putting chargebacks on it? Its stealing! And lots and lots of people do that.

people are so scared that they are going to get ripped off when doing business online with a person or company they have never used before. Sometimes a charge back seems like the only route, however if a company makes themselves available and works with the client usually a solutions that both the company and client can be happy with.

gido, that is just it, people think a chargeback is the only route and then everyone ends up paying for it. It maybe an easy route and that is why people use it, but people don't always use it correctly.

I personally have never had to use a chargeback on a company. But I guess it does become comfortable knowing that it is a last resort option.
