Dinix Review - 04-20-2004, 06:58 PM

Hi all,

Getting tired of the current shared hosting offers, having moved from two very reputable providers already in April (Dathorn and UnitedHosting) I decided to go for a VDS. I did a lot of research. I read good things about JVDS/VPSColo, ServInt and Dinix, but ended up going with Dinix because they gave me the fastest and most friendly response to my sales emails.

I signed up last night, and got my payment confirmation email about 30 minutes later. My server was up about three hours ago. Not as fast as I'm used to with shared hosting because they have obviously got to setup a new VDS account on their system and install all the software, so I was not bothered at all by this.

I got into my server no problem. In their email it told me I needed to contact them if I changed the name servers and host name so that they could update the Reverse DNS, which I did. I posted a ticket on "Medium" and had a friendly response letting me know they had made the changes after about 15 minutes. Excellent!

Since it's a VDS, I have full control and can set it up how I like, so that is all I can comment on as of yet. I'll keep you all updated.

Lets see if I can stay with them for a bit longer than UnitedHosting and Dathorn then, eh? Maybe I just demand too much? When I'm paying for a service I just expect performance. I don't expect them to have NO problems, and I don't expect 5 minute support, but I do expect reasonable response times (Hell UnitedHosting) and I don't expect the staff to have a temper with me on every ticket (Hello Dathorn).

Thanks.

Hi all,

I posted two tickets yesterday morning, one asking for Fantastico license to be activated (my mom requested it for her site :P) and one asking for a reboot. Both were resolved within ~15 minutes. Excellent!

I posted another ticket yesterday evening, as my VPS had gone belly-up. It appeared to be running RedHat 9 according to WHM but running cat /etc/redhat-release said 7.3. I'm not sure why WHM was claiming that it was 9 because it was always 7.3. Then I realised there was a new stable release of CPanel so I thought I might as well do the upgrade, BUT, it installed loads of packages for RedHat 9 instead of RedHat 7.3. HTTP, POP3 and FTP were all left down after this. I restarted FTP and POP3, no problem. HTTP was a different story altogether. I tried to restart it via WHM which failed so I went into SSH and did service httpd start. I got

Apache 1.3 Configuration Detected
Please see /user/local/apache-2.4.40/man/migration

I did not understand this but assumed the WHM update had upgraded to Apache 2? Usually it just ignores Apache...

Anyway I posted a ticket with Dinix. I did not recieve any response and kept posting at the ticket for about three hours. I had posted the ticket as 'Urgent' and IMO this wasn't acceptable. However I got a response letting me know they had been working on it since they recieved the ticket but that they could not give me an ETA because they had to get a head tech to look into it. No problem, just so long as they were working on it, I didn't mind. It's been 12 hours now, I'll let you all know what happens.

Thanks

This is taking a bit longer than anticipated. I have told them that I'd rather they just wiped and reinstalled my VPS if that would speed things up. Will keep you all updated.

Thanks

They're setting up a new VPS for me. Great! Been very happy with the response times and knowledgable staff at Dinix so far, great stuff :)

Hi all,

Are all hosting companies the same? Two and a half hours ago they were willing to setup a new VPS for me because it was going to take too long to resolve the issue with the current setup. Now they're telling me they don't do that. WHY do companies speak before they think and then try to pull out? I'm not letting them get away with that. It's illegal in my country to start with, and I am willing to take action if it's required. They want to charge me $35 now. I'm telling them no.

I'll let you know how this goes.

Thanks

Hi,

With help from Dinix and others I have gotten this sorted out at last. I didn't get the VPS restore that they promised which makes me quite angry, but nevermind now, all in all there was a problem which has been caused by running up2date and Dinix weren't co-operating, but it's sorted now.

Thanks
