Dathorn Review - 04-13-2004, 03:12 AM

Hi,

I just thought I'd post a review on Dathorn.

I signed up with them on the 3rd April, 2004. My account was setup within ~6 hours, which wasn't the fastest turn around I've experienced, but not bad, since I didn't intend to add any domains to the account until later on the 4th anyway.

I posted a support ticket requesting that phpSuExec be disabled for my account. The turn around for this ticket was quite a while, 4+ hours, which was a bit longer than I had anticipated, and Andrew was a bit rough with his response, however this wasn't a big problem as my software (PHPAudit) released a new version 1.0.9.1 that same day which has phpSuExec support.

So far, not over impressed, but for the price ($13.50/month for 2GB data transfer and 30GB bandwidth) I'm satisfied.

On the 9th, I was unable to access my site or any of Dathorn as well as man other places through the 12th without using a proxy server. It turns out that this was a fault with my ISP, and nothing to do with Dathorn.

I have posted two tickets in the last ~48 hours. Each have been promptly responded to and resolved.

I will not comment on the anonity, etc., as I'm not using it for reselling, and therefore this has no affect on me whatsoever - I haven't done any research in this area as it really isn't a factor for me.

In general, the server is very fast, and loads are kept around ~1.5 and that's on a dual Xeon 2.4GHz box, so that's fine by me.

So, a bit flaky to start off with, but I am now a very satisfied customer and intend to stay with Dathorn until my sites grow too big for a shared server, at which time I will be getting a dedicated server from VenturesOnline.

I cannot comment on uptime, etc., yet, as I've been with them a mear 10 days and obviously the problem with my ISP earlier caused a few misleading thoughts there, but I will keep you all updated with this thread on a weekly basis.

Thanks

4 and 6 hours for non-emergency support tickets? I think that is pretty good. Try to bring your car in for a brake service on the same day ......

Well, I'd like to be able tos say more good things about Dathorn, but I'll be cancelling my account with them tonight... It appears that their data centre (ThePlanet / ServerMatrix) are having network difficulties at the moment, which is obviously not Dathorn's fault at all, but it's the fact that he does not appear to be interested. He appears to have a temper and the words "No this is definitely not a problem with us..." just don't make me feel like that's the kind of place I want my sites to be hosted, thanks.

I'll start a new thread tomorrow, I just signed up with UnitedHosting (www.unitedhosting.co.uk) last night. The price is increased and the quantity is decreased, but you get what you pay for, and from what I've heard they go up and over for their customers and are very friendly :)...

Thanks
