i blame cpanel for the downfall of the webhosting industry - 03-26-2004, 09:04 AM

I'll make this short, with a pinch of sweet mixed in with bitter

With cpanel came server adminsitration at the click of the mouse, with that came teenagers who know nothing about business and or how to manage a server, with not knowing how to manage a business came overselling, with gross-overselling came outrageous offers like 2gb space 200gb bandwidth / $10/month .

Not much we can do about it now, i just thought i would share my opinion with you .

Honestly, if there is ANYONE to blame, it would be PayPal and various other payment processors. Lemme tell you that kiddies have killed the template and designing industries and that has nothing to do with cpanel. The overall problem is that kids can RECIEVE the money in the first place. Most kids are raised on computers these days, and their parents condone it because it is now, it is the future, and if you don't know them you better know something..

So with or without easy programs, the kiddies are going to get into it, the reason that webhosting/designing/development has been flooded with these kiddies is simply because there is no overhead costs. They can pirate the software they need sell their stuff on websites below cost and on forums, and instantly recieve payment. Even if they can't get a hold of the actual cash, they can buy something on ebay or elsewhere.

That's a very good point, but some of us (myself) only use paypal to purchase goods, and very rarely sell.

Also, paypal does good things by restricting usage by users who can't / haven't verified their identities.

But, you are very correct, the blame is placed straight on their parents, and society for letting these types of things happening.

No, its not Cpanel's fault because they offer the abilty to limit reseller accounts with the ability to oversell. You should blame the webhost whom buy these dedicated servers and then not switch reseller accounts are not allowed to oversell. We all play some role in the downfall of webhosting.

Why not blame the customer then ? They should be able to differentiate between quality and low-cost webhosts. If they cant, they probably wouldnt be the kind of customer you'd like anyway

Blaming a technology for a non-existing downfall of an industry is not right. It sounds more like cheap complaining and whining and that you are not able to separate yourself from the dark side of the industry.

No matter what business or industry you're in - there will always be a certain kind of competition to complain about. A good business will know how to separate itself from this competition and take advantage of it. Others keep complaining to cover up their own short comings.

If these kids started to charge the proper rate, then there would not be a problem at all.
The problem would still exist, because the life of the teenager would most likely take priority over the business.

However, kids can get hold of reseller accounts to easily these days, i think this is the problem with terms to the Hosting industry.
I believe reseller accounts should be validated on a regular basis by the hosting provider, and if it is found that the reseller is hosting a reseller account, then that hosting company should demand to see a business license, if no business license is provided, access should be suspended.
