Basically web-hosting directories are of two types: paid WHDs and free WHDs. For paid directories, either web hosts pay a set amount for placing their banners on the site, or they pay commission if they get customers via that medium. I think directories are very helpful in the sense they allow you to get another link back to your website. I'm not a fan of the paid inclusion, they can become very eliteist by nature.
