Post My SurfSpeedy review - 02-28-2005, 03:58 PM

I signed up with surfspeedy in november 2004. I had that 1 dollar for 3 months offer and I wanted to upgrade to their 14$ package after this 3 months period.

The first month I had only minor problems:

- Homepage builder was not working (I didn't contacted support because of this, I never use a homepage builder)

- Awstats and webalizer links was not showing up in my Cpanel. Urchin gave me the error "Unable to get profile id from configuration database" when I tryed to access it. I contacted support, after a few days my Urchin was working but the links to webalizer and awstats was still missing. I gave up, I said ok, it's ok just with Urchin.

- Some downtimes (5-10 minutes daily)

- a little high load on the server (3-7 it was variable)

- email outage, resolved after the second chat with their support staff

The end of december I started to have major problems. On december 20 a problem with their DNS servers left my site down for more than 36 hours. I requested a credit of one day for every outage hour and they granted me a month free.

In January I saw that the server load was starting to put down the server daily. The load had spikes up to 40 and I started to receive every day notices from my monitoring services that my site was down. I contacted the support by chat and they told me that an administrator is going to solve this problem. Also, starting from January the Spamassassin was down all the time.

Near the end of January my site started to go down several times every day. The server load was very high almoust all the time. I contacted their support by support tickets and chat to ask what is going on and when the server problems will be resolved. I got a lot of apologies, they told me that an administrator is going to look what's going with that server but the situation was going worse.

My visitors kept sending me messages that my site is down and they cannot access it. They thought that it's my fault somehow and that I should do something to keep the website up.

Starting from february my site had around 30% downtime daily. When it was up, it was very slow. I contacted support again, hoping to get a sollution to this problem. They told me that they admins are monitoring the server, to wait for an answer from their admins and they closed my ticket 3 times in a row.

Then I had enough of this sick joke. After a day with 3 downtimes, and more than 4 hours outage I decided to cancel my account.

My ratings regarding surfspeedy:

Reliability: 4/10
Chat support (level 1 for simple problems): 7/10
Ticket support (level 1 and up to administrators): 5/10
Pricing: 9/10
Overall: 5/10
Recommended: No

I've had no problems with there service for the last 8 months. All the scripts and stats tool worked all the time and there wasn't any problems with email. My site transfers about 20-40 gigs a month and gets a modest amount of hits each day. Sorry to here you had to change the service but according to what you went through, I don't blame you.

I had those same problems, but with Ipowerweb. For some reason they are highly recommended, but after 2 years of problems with them, I finally left and created my own isht.

My experiences and thus, my ratings for Surfspeedy's web hosting services are similar. Extended downtime, problems with DNS, unresolved issues, and the impression that important concerns were put on the "back-burner".

I wound up moving 5 domains from SurfSpeedy.com to other web hosting services, although I had already paid SurfSpeedy for the year. It was prudent to cut my losses there, and reinvest in a more reliable service elsewhere.

Reliability: 4/10
Chat support (level 1 for simple problems): 7/10
Ticket support (level 1 and up to administrators): 5/10
Pricing: 9/10
Overall: 5/10

Surfspeedy is definetely very loosy. After 10 days of usage:

Reliability: not long enough with them to rate
Chat support: 7/10
Ticket support: 3/10 (they were ignoring my issues but simply waiting for an entire day or 2 before handling anything)
Pricing: 9/10, but still $4.95 is way too expensive for the support service they offer.
Not recommended...

I have had issues with server timezone, smtp, mailing list server settings. It took way too much time for any of those issues to be solved.

I used to have http://icdsoft.com, and they are very reliable, tickets had always been taken care in a very fast fashion. No downtime. The reason I moved is because i needed more bandwidth, but still i'm not too happy, and i'm looking for your recommendations in terms of wb hosting.

I switched numerous domains to the following three. These three hosts are equally excellent and customer service is unmatched (direct with owner, not some service from a remote desk!). I use three different host to avoid putting all my sites in one location, just in case ther IS downtime I wouldn't want all my web sites to be down at the same time.

1. Colorteck.com
2. Potentproducts.com
3. Northtrex.com

These three equally meet my VERY HIGH expectations when it comes to hosting my sites.
