Are Hosting certifications worth it?

Hi,

I was just wondering what is the significance\relevance of hosting certifications from big/reputed companies like microsoft etc..

Is it worth it?

I really believe more in the practicality of things then nice decorations like:
Microsoft Web Hoster Program, Microsoft Partner Program, Web Presence Provider etc. etc.

what are your opinions on it?

As with any certification, the value isn't that you have it. The value is that you've done it.

What I mean is that if you pick the certifications that you or your business has, you're pushing yourself up to a different level. The quality and value of that level depends on the certification.

ohh.. well actually i have heard that if you know where to put your money you can get these certifications easily.. is there any truth in that?

There are places that simply "teach to the test". But do you think that it's worth it to go to one of these places?

As I said above, it's not the certification that means something, it's the knowledge that you have by obtaining it. Simply having a certification may get you a client, but it will certainly not keep the client when something goes wrong.

Personally, I wouldn't feel comfortable lying to customers in this way either.

ABBIE.ca makes a good point. What you do with your certification is very important and will impact your business and your reputation.

From a pure business perspective, having the certifications may also allow you to participate in different programs. For example, to participate in the Microsoft Certified Partner program, one requirement is to have staff that are Microsoft Certified Professionals. This is worthwhile for stuff like free licenses, marketing opportunities, referrals, beta/alpha software...etc.
