I am planning to go live with my domainregistration site within a month now. Is it a good thing to get a job done by a SEO company? What do they actually do. Anybody know what the costs are to get your site optimized. Any recommendations?

SEs recently changed the way they rank sites. Most SEO specialists have no clue how to optimize a size after this change.
So be careful picking a SEO company.

What was the average price to get a good optimization by a decent company?...

Varies. I guss it's $1000 per site in average.
