Question General Startup Cost - 08-11-2004, 10:42 AM

Hi, I am looking into starting up a reseller webhosting company and I am wondering what the general startup costs are. I don't need a exact figure just a ballpark one.

Many thanks,

Jugalbandhi - AKA Newbie.

Start-up costs - 08-18-2004, 10:40 PM

It all depends on what you are calling start-up costs.

If all you mean is reseller hosting space and some money in your Domain reseller account, then easily under $1000.

As an example;

You want to pre-pay 1 years reseller hosting after you investigate the companies out there and know what to look for.
At least 1GB and 10GB (10 to 1 works well for me) and features. $100-500.

Money in your Domain Registration account $200 or so to start with. Again shop around and don't go the Enom or Wild West routes. I pay $6.75 per domain with no deposit or minimum and I only charge my resellers $8.75. I keep money in my account because everything is automated and I want the registrations to start as soon as they press enter on the PayPal button....:D

Billing/automation software $35-150, or use the free one in new versions of Fantastico.

That's about it for out of pocket costs, the rest is just your hard work and 2-3 years of waiting to make minimum wage.

Money in your Domain Registration account $200...

So you are saying that you have an account with the entity that you are buying hosting services from, and that you keep it pre-loaded with funds for them to draw from when you get a new customer?

I would have thought that you already had bought a chunk of diskspace and bandwidth, and that the customer would just take a portion of that.

Can you explain that a bit more?

Thanks!

Thermit;

The $200 I suggested is for the Domain Registration Account (I pay $6.75 per domain I register for someone) not your Reseller Hosting. They are two different things, you are hosting Domains, but not always registering them for people.

Depending on who you register through you may or may not need a deposit in your account. Personally, I don't, but I keep money there so that my billing software does the registrations as soon as I am paid (instant).

Lets start with how we spell know, then the math you used in your other reply to me... I don't blame you for wanting to sell hosting, we all do, but you are really misleading people if they don't know better and irritating them if they do.

If you read the literature my reseller account is bigger than thier entire computer. Unlimited hosting doesn't do you any good if there isn't room on the computers. In other words they are over selling because they know that most people have trouble using 100 megs of hosting space. EBay buyers either know a lot about this stuff or next to nothing, they are lokking for the latter.
