Question advice needed for expanding company - 07-07-2004, 10:02 PM

Hi all,

Where to start... hummmm....

I am have a small business. I provide on-site technical support for small businesses with no more than 30 employees. I maintain there intranet and the broadband connections, servers, network, desktops, VPNs, application support... you get the picture.

I have started to host a few of my clients web sites via a reseller account with a reliable host. (all is well to here)

Now some of my clients are asking about SSL, shopping carts, online billing, and such. I came across this site http://www.fluxservices.com and I was impressed with the comprehensive services provided and I would like to do something similar with my hosting-site-business.

So I want to include secure site via some kind of CA so I can employ online billing, processing and such.... I have looked at modernbill and a chained SSL.

I do not know of is who kind of merchant account I should use, I don't have a lot of extra capital :( It all goes back into the business and school.

Help would be great :P

1.) I would like to provide something similar.

2.) I do not know if what he offers comes as a package from a larger reseller or if it is bits and pieces.

3.) If it is bits and pieces then I need to find out what bits and pieces work together and which do not.

4.) Cost, cost, cost.... (estimated) always the bottom line.

So I am researching the possibility of adding onto my existing venture but I need to be educated before I do so.

Thanks a lot,
ash

SSL certificates are not that expensive anymore. You get a decent one for around $50.00 per year. Many reseller web hosts also offer anonymous SSL certificates on their servers. Every reseller can use those.

I was thinking of producing my own from a linux distro

I should be able to creat them in different cyphers and bit legnths 128, 256, 768, 1024, 1280, 2084....

but they wont have the niftly logo that most CA's have. I shouldn't have to pay for a name but how do I insure the cypher like the top CA's do?

Get a real merchant account then. It will save you time and hassle in the long run. Talk to your local bank first. Maybe they have an affordable solution for you.

this is hard to admit but the nornal merchant accounts that I have inquired about have turned me down. I am a currently student and I don't use finacial aid because I prefer to pay for things upfront, I hate owing $ to anyone and esp. intrest (watse of $ for small things in my opinion). Most merchant accounts will charge a lot for returns or denied or contested CC recipts. I do not want the hastle of this. Basicaly I am small and every penny counts.

You could work with checks, cash, PayPal and 2Checkout. That's basically what I am doing right now and I have always worked out a way to get money from the clients.
