Has anyone heard of this outfit: toplevelhost.com? The reseller package is the best I've ever seen... $89.99 a year comes out to less than $8.00 a month for unlimited domains on 500mg of space... But, some of their links on there page are dead links, no 1-800 number, I couldn't access their forum, etc.
There are telltale signs of those hosting companies ready to take your money and not give you the service. I do not have first hand knowledge that toplevel is a bad host, but there are a few things on the checklist you should go through before making a decision:
1. Does their web site work and do they have enough information instead of a few lines of text.
2. Do they or are they willing to give you contact information ie. phone number, mailing address, location of office, how long they have been in business etc.
3. Have you tried to contact them? Do they try just to sell you the product and don't answer the real questions that make a difference? Where is your datacenter located? Do you have emergency support? etc...
4. And please..last of all - If it's too good to be true, it probably is. If you feel inside that this is not right, you are better off paying more for a service that you can trust.
Look on other directories for other companies. Remember that price is not everything. Call them up and when you finally reach a company you are comfortable with, then you should start to make your decision.
Thanks for recommendations Steve. I signed up with Eurofficial. Small group of techy guys and I'm learning more in two weeks with them than four years with Gemstream. Gemstream provides excellent support but I found my website stable and not needing much support. For $15.00 a month, I can host all my websites at Eurofficial as opposed to mega-bucks at Gemstream... So far so good.
