Ben, would you rather goto pharmacy.net for prescriptions or ph4r1234677122.net ?

See the point? It's based on the knowledge of consumers and the attractivness of a no non-sense domain name.

When a company who makes millions of dollars yearly needs to build another website what would it buy?

1) 18k or 180k is not big money to them.
2) When they will spend their money on advertising, people will remember pharmacy.net but no one will remember ph4r1234677122.net, so their project will fail and money on advertising will be wasted.

Domain should be memorable. You don't want to advertise something people will forget after one minute because you want your advertisement to work and since the advertisement plays key role in any business, bad domain in many cases will determine the success or the failure of a project.

And also type in traffic.

http://inventory.overture.com <--- This is used to estimate the type in traffic of a domain.

Check the numbers for mortgage.com

14655 - to roghly estimate divide by 4 and multiple by 30.
110,000 visitors per month just by the name alone - no promotion needed. Now if I were to put up a page of just ad links (ppc ads). Those ads would actually pay $5 a click because mortgage seeking visitors are so $$$$. Think about that without promotion and thousands of ppl come to my site to click on $5 links. THATS A LOT OF MONEY IN THE NAME ITSELF.

Well I can understand having memorable domain names... but I still wonder why companies would be willing to buy a single domain for thousands of dollars... can't be worth that much.

I will never look at an eel the same way again after watching "More Eels". If you don't know what I'm referring to, feel blessed you haven't.
