overture # comes from where???

Can someone tell me where the number from Overture comes from? I think I know what it is suppose to mean but where or how does Overture actually come up with it?

Overture count for a keyword is a number of searches for that keyword that was done during the last entire month trough search engines affiliated with Overture.
