Emails Asking to Buy a Domain (netiquette)

I was just wondering what's to consider if you were to email a domain owner asking them whether they want to sell and for how much. What should you say if you want to get taken seriously and what are some things to avoid when doing this?

well first address them by their name eg. Dear Mr. Smith

next make it a formal letter. try something like this:

Dear Mr. Smith,

I came accross your domain name, http://www.asdf.com/, and would like to know if you were interested in selling it.

just be polite and don't use "u", "ur", or any other various internet lingo. also try not to send from a hotmail account or an unprofessional sounding e-mail address. so if you send one from sales@domain.com or domains@domain.com it is far more professional than w0ot_1_r_1337@hotmail.com. Use your real name too and not your nickname.

Yeah, it does help Crusader, but I would never do that anyway. ;)

I was asking this question because I don't know if there's something really important that you don't want to say. I mean generally would you just ask if they are willing to sell the domain and for how much, or do you make an offer right away? I'm thinking that you don't want to make an upfront offer, but just ask if they are willing to sell.
