This is just asking for a C&D!

I'm new to domain names, so this might be a dumb question: If you do get a C&D, does that mean the name is pretty much worthless ?? I [being a newbie] thought that people TRIED to come up with domain names that corporations like Nextel would like to purchase. Couldn't you argue that the name refers to a particular type of Nascar racing, and has NOTHING to do with the Nextel phone company ?? Has anyone out there ever heard of a domain owner taken to court, or is the C&D designed to scare us into submission??

In the domain community we consider C&D bait such as this worthless largely because the corporations themselves have gotten smarter. Rather then reward potential squatters - corporations are going to puruse you, the owner, unless you surrender the domain for max. compensation of only reg fee.

Such a domain is clearly a trademark of the event organization. If they were to pursue you it would be open and shut!

Companies rarely take domain holders to court because a much simplified process has come into play called Uniform Dispute Resolution Policy (UDRP). Instead of filing a lawsuit, companies for at much cheaper cost will file a complaint at one of two approved arbitration organizations. The only relief these arbitrators can grant is transfer of the domain. There is no way to avoid their judgement because all ICANN registrars are bound to their ruling.
