Best switches? - 04-06-2004, 10:25 PM

What is a good & affordable switch that does SNMP, FULL 10x100 switching (and possibly 1000/copper) and offers throttling and such?

Anyone have anything they can recommend?

Hello,
I would recommend a Cisco 2950 24 Port or 48 Port. You could also look at a Extreme Summit48i. We currently run the Cisco 2950 48 Port and also some Extreme 48i. It is really depending on the income you can spend. You can pickup a used Extreme 48i for anywhere for $1000 or less and you can pickup a new Cisco 2950 for around $3000 new as a figure. I mean, it depends if you got the money to spend.

Yeah, i don't want to buy junk. I've always trusted cisco so i'll keep my eyes peeled for a deal on some of there switches. I only need 24 port density right now. I have about 6 1u servers and the rest are 4-6u so i don't need more ports.

You can never go wrong with Ciscos and even if it is a little more in the beginning you will like it.

looking for switches that won't die/slow down because i'm pushing 2-3000 open httpd connections every second - i have 5 or 6 servers that run spidering with 300+ threads (connections) a piece, so i want something that will handle the load/throttling and most definately vlans.

thanks all.

I believe Dell has what you are looking for, but I'm not for sure.
Dell has always been low-cost, but still reliable.

Personally, I prefer Netgear. We have been using them for some time now to network over 300 servers together and they work great, never go down, and cost about 1/2 as much as cisco or 3com.

If you're looking for cheaper switches, go for 3Com. I have used many 3Com switches and have to say I have been very impressed with the functionality and reliability of these, even with extremely heavy loads. If you're looking for something that is rock solid for a mission critical data centre, I always recommend Cisco, simply because you cannot go wrong with them and because of their track record.

Thanks
